While at WJMC, I learned that when you want to be a reporter, it helps to become an expert in a particular area. That makes you more marketable, because you have an area that you can report on that you are knowledgeable about.
This makes so much sense to me. Now, I understand why Mizzou wants all of their journalism majors to have a double major. It also gives you a chance to explore your other interests and decide if you want to use them to help you with journalism or the other way around.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to find a way to take this back to my newspaper at home.

Thursday, July 16th, 2009“Angels Watching Over Me”
Wednesday, July 15th, 2009All I can do is thank God for the blood of Jesus. What could have been an exciting day today, ended up being extremely boring. After waiting an hour for a tour of the capital, we went on a very uninformative tour. We finally got to leave at about 4:00.
Back on the George Mason campus, we found out that at around 4:45, there was a shooting on Capital Hill. I immediately thought of one of my mother’s favorite songs. There were “angels watching over me, every move I make, angels watching over me. Angels watching over me, every step I take, angels watching over me” (Amy Grant).
As long as Steven doesn’t have any more dreams about terrorist attacks happening while we’re here, we should be good.
Time to Learn
Sunday, July 12th, 2009Hey everyone! I’m Nicole Jones, and I’m proud to be the new copy editor of the NSPA All American Rockwood Summit Talon! Today I arrived at the George Mason campus in Virginia for the Washington Journalism and Media Conference. Not much has happened yet, but I can’t wait to learn all sorts of things to take back to our paper at home. (We’re working toward that Gallup award.) I’ve already got one idea – publishing sports stories on the web after every game. Well, got to go. Be back tomorrow.
